Recap: Fiber/Glass
The Difference Between Print and Web Design
February 12, 2010 Emily Lewis
Last week, we hosted our first event for 2010, Fiber/Glass: The Difference Between Print and Web Design, presented by Ben Byrne.
The event was an overwhelming success, thanks to our new venue, One Up Elevated Lounge, and over 40 attendees!
If you weren't able to join us or want a refresher, we've got you covered.
Recap
Ben's presentation was an excellent primer on the core differences between print and web design, namely:
- Tools: Be sure to use the right application for the right medium
- Color: Print can, and should be consistent. However, the web varies according to a range of factors, from monitors, to contrast, to gamma.
- Resolution: Print is typically 300dpi, while the web is usually 72dpi. That doesn't leave much room for cheating and using web graphics for print.
- Typography: The "font situation" on the web is pretty much crap. Technologies are emerging, but there are a myriad of issues that restrict broad font use on the web. In contrast, anything goes with fonts in print.
- Interactivity: Print isn't interactive the way the web is, so design for web shouldn't be identical to that for print. You must consider how people use a web site (navigation, search, etc.), how the web is dynamic (revisions are possible any time), and how you can customize content and experience for users.

Video
This year, we decided to invest in our own Flip Ultra HD … and have the video to prove it. We're still working out lighting and camera position, so forgive us if this is a little on the dark side:
Please note: we are now using Vimeo for our event recordings. Be sure to join our group.

As always, Jason and I put our mediocre photography skills to work. Photos are available on Flickr:
Coming in March!
Our next presentation is Red vs. Green and Other Questions: Creating a Vibrant CNM Social Community on February 3, 2010, beginning at 6:30pm at One Up.
In this presentation, CNM Miranda Evjen will discuss how the social media presence began for the state's largest college, how it’s changed and what CNM is planning for the future.
Eventbrite registration for this event is already full. However, the waitlist is open, so get your name on it today in case a spot opens up.
Of course, if you can't get a spot for the presentation, please feel free to join us at One Up afterwards (usually around 7:30pm) for socializing and billiards. No RSVP required.
